Writing is a very difficult thing. It is the toughest fence you will face while learning languages. But do not worry, there are ways that help students who want to improve their writing skills

There are two kinds of students. The first ones have little know how ( knowledge ) and they want to write well. The only way for those is to read more and more. The other ones have rich know how,but unluckily they do not know how to write. Today i ll show them how to write well using one of the elements of critical thinking.

The elements of critical thinking are : Observation, facts, inferences, assumptions, opinions, arguments
.

Let us use just the 1st element which is observation, and try to see how can it helps us while writing.

Let us take an example. You are asked to write about this topic : Adult illiteracy in Arab countries - Situation and possible solutions

Let's apply observation.
You observe the topic. You underline the important words

Example : Illiteracy : definition / Adult : Female and male ( if you include children it will be out of the topic and your teacher won t accept it ) / In Arab countries : Do not include countries that are not Arabs / Situation : Means now,not tomorrow or yesterday, today. Also observe that if you want to talk about a situation you have to provide its causes and of course solutions

.

This is how you should start, you do not start writing directly, if you do, you will end up writing something irrelevant, something out of the topic
.

Now after you observe the topic you have a clear idea about what are you going to write : Definiton of illiteracy , write about female and male in the Arab world, and write about the current situation and suggest some solutions.

You have a clear outline.

What should you do now ? Start writing ? NO,not yet

.

The second step is free writing or what we call brainstorming. I will explain, you just take a pen and a paper and write anything that comes to your mind.
Let us see an example

1 : Poverty is one of the main causes of adult illiteracy
2: Lack of awareness of some parents is a cause of adult illitercy
3: Adult illiteracy poses the greatest threat to Arab countries
4: Adult illiteracy poses a threat to Arab countries
5: Government should provide solutions to adult illiteracy
6: Illiteracy means being unable to read or write
7: Illiteracy is the condition of being unable to read and write

Let us stop here and move to the third step which is selecting the good ideas and the relevant iteams. In the second step we listed down any items we think are relevant to the topic question and now we will see if they are really relevant or not by applying observation again.

The 1st and the 2nd ideas are relevant to the topic because they tell us about one of the main causes of adult illiteracy The 3rd one is too general even though we can still use it
The 4th one is irrelevant because adult illiteracy is not the greatest threat, there are many others. So, we either change it to ONE OF THE GREATEST or do not use it
The 5th one is too general, too. It does not state how they should do so. So,do not use it
The 6th and the 7th are good ones because they give a definition of illiteracy

Now we go back to our outline. We said:

Definition of illiteracy : We have it in the 6th and 7th idea
Causes and current situation : The 1st and the 2nd ideas
Solutions : Here we do not have solution,so just write some and observe if they are relevant and use them

Now the final step which is organization

If you are writing an essay you will do like this

Introduction : Definition of illiteracy
( At the end of the introduction it is very important to write what you are going to write in the body. e.g : In this essay,i will firstly talk about...... and then discuss..... )
The body : paragraph 1 : Causes
Paragraph 2: Solutions
The conclusion : restate the topic and give your opinion or end up with any point you want to mention

At the end it is very important in writing to imagine that you are writing to an ordinary person not your teacher. Do not say that the teacher knows this so why should i define it,no, this is wrong, take the teacher as if he is nothing and as if he does not know anything

What i have been writing is a very good method to follow while writing.Believe me it will help you so much

Step one : Observation : A conversation between you and the topic
Step two : List down any ideas you think they are relevant to the topic question
Step three :Select the relevant ones
Step four :Organize the relevant ideas and put them into seperate paragraphes or sentences

Remeber these four words while writing : Observe, list, select, organize

I hope you will benefit
Good Luck

thx for the nice and clear explanation

I agree with in everything but one which is about the introduction. beacuse in the introduction when u finish the definition it is not a good idea to tell ur readers what are u talking about
instead u use what we call the thesis statement and in it you mention what is ur topic about.
eg. This serious problem in the Arab countries are the result of Lack of awareness and .....

i say so because a thesis statement is a must in the introduction

again thx for the lesson
and we are glad to have someone like u with us in the forum

Exactly, but i did not want to mention thesis statement because it may cause confusion. But now since you mention it , my next topic will be about thesis statement. Thanks OLa4:smailes12:
