The tense
A- The tense i.e. verb timing, shows two things:
1- The time when an action happens i.e. past, present or future.
2- Whether the action is completed or not.
B- Time can be represented as a line starting in the past and leading through the present on to the future.
The present actions
The present actions are those take place in the present or at the moment of the speech. The present has its simple form, progressive form and perfect form.
The simple present tense
Form: noun or pronoun + present infinitive without to
Examples:
1- I go to market every day.
2- She often swims in the river.
3- They always play football.
4- The sun rises every morning.
5- Birds fly.
But notice that:
The 3rd person singular i.e. (he – she – it) always requires the (s) at the end of the verb (see examples 2 and 4 above) we find (swims and rises).
Use: This tense is used to express habitual actions and facts or actions that happen more than once.
Adverbs:
Such adverbs used with the simple present are usually adverbs of frequency i.e. (show how often) such as often, usually, everyday and so on.
However, Don’t Forget That: the simple present also can be used to express regular future actions as:
1- The bus leaves tomorrow at six.
2- They visit their garden tomorrow after noon.
The present continuous tense
Form: noun or pronoun + verb to be + present participle, as shown in the diagram below
I am
He
She is + present participle i.e. (verb + ing)
It
We
You are
They
Examples:
1- I am writing now.
2- At this moment you are reading English.
3- They are going to school.
But notice that:
1. Abstract verbs, or verbs, which do only exist in mind, do not take (ing) form: we do not say Salwa is loving Mohammad but we say Salwa loves Mohammad.
2. Verbs of senses are usually followed by (ing) form as: Look! Ali is playing/ Listen! Adam is singing.
Use: this tense is used to express actions that are still going on. Or actions that happen in front of the speaker’s eyes. It contrasts with the simple present because the simple present is used for repeated actions while the continuous denotes actions, which happen NOW.
Adverbs:
We use adverbs, which show the every moment of the speech like now, at this moment, etc
I wish you the best
