One of the most beloved characters on FOX's "Prison Break" met her violent demise in last night's episode following failed contract negotiations with actress Sarah Wayne Callies. But don't blame the actress - as TV Guide reveals, the producers were going to kill her off anyway, it was only a question of whether they were going to do it in 4, 9 or 13 episodes. She wasn't going to last the whole season.

The producers claim they originally wanted the actress to remain on the show for an entire season of 22 episodes and she wasn't going to be killed off. But FOX didn't like the ideas for season 3 and asked the writers to come up with a new concept.

At this point, the producers came up with Sona and decided that the best way to motivate Michael (Wentworth Miller) to do what he was going to do in season 3 would be to kill off his darling Sara.

What happened then is that the actress who, as a number of fans, was invested in the loving relationship between Sara and Michael, may have been shocked to hear her character was going to be killed off. In any event, she refused to make a deal to come back to the show.

In other words, if FOX was going to kill Sara off, they would have to do it without her.

In last night's episode, Lincoln reveals "Prison Break" fan's worst nightmare - the box he received a week earlier contained Dr. Sara Tancredi's head! The producers claim this gruesome ending for the character was not meant to punish the actress.

The question on everyone's mind (and I believe FOX's, too) is: Has "Prison Break" now officially jumped the shark? Is this the moment where droves of frustrated fans will abandon the series? Yes, people have been dying on the show since episode #1, but Sara?

The ratings are already down from about 9 million to 7.5 million.

The show was originally intended as a 2-season series (one focusing on the escape, the other on the manhunt).

But FOX wanted to keep a hit on their schedule, especially since their falls always turn into ratings disasters and the only thing keeping FOX at the end of the day on the map is the blockbuster "American Idol."

I will personally be very surprised if the ratings don't continue to go down after this episode.

But, on the other hand, maybe this was the 'shot in the arm' the show needed? Although, I seriously doubt that.
