The Toyota FT-HS Hybrid Sports Concept is a sports car concept which could fill a gap in Toyota's model lineup left vacant since 1997 and the passing of the Toyota Supra. The Toyota FT-HS Concept could be powered by a 3.5 litre V6 working in conjunction with an electric motor, to allow for around 400 horsepower and performance figures in the 4 seconds to 60mph range. The 2+2 Toyota FT-HS concept has been in the works for around a year. In that time Toyota's designers at Calty Design Research based in California have created an aggressive, angular design not unlike the Lexus LF-A concept from 2005. Although the appearance of the FT-HS Hybrid Sports Concept was apparently influenced by the forms taken by a downhill speed skier. The 'not-entirely-environmentally-friendly' (but it's a start) engine, is visible through the bonnet of the Toyota FT-HS Concept, similar to the shaker hoods popular on American hotrods. While the rear lateral air intakes above the rear wheels direct cooling air over the battery packs positioned in the rear to help with weight distribution. Another feature of the Toyota FT-HS Hybrid Sports concept is a retractable roof which can fold down into the space occupied by the rear seats, making it a two seater in this mode. Inside the driver orientated interior of the Toyota FT-HS concept are angular control surfaces echoing the styling of the exterior. The seats of the FT-HS concept consist of thin red-orange colored pads attached to the surrounding structure, and the hubless steering wheel features paddle shifters for rapid gear changes.

The Toyota F3R minivan concept from the 2006 Detroit Motor Show was designed jointly by Calty Design Research Inc., Toyota's California based design studio, and the Advanced Product Strategy group, also California based. The Toyota F3R aims revive the glory days of the minivan, when sales were almost double what they are now. Minivans are often seen as an old persons mode of transport and to combat this the F3R has been specifically designed for the young family. Whereas many minivan designs attempt to hide the characteristics of a van, the Toyota F3R's designers have embraced the features associated with a minivan. The large, prominent grille does nothing to hide the fact it is bolted to a minivan, and to its credit, a rather attractive minivan. Inside, the F3R's designers have created a versatile seating space, with 3 row cinema-style seating, the rear rows sitting higher than the row in front. And when the F3R is parked up, the seating can be reconfigured to make a sophisticated lounge area for conversation or watching the 2 track-mounted LCD TV's. Although there is no word on production, Toyota has hinted that design elements of the F3R may appear on future Toyota models.

The Toyota CS&S, (CS&S meaning Compact Sports and Specialty) from the 2003 Frankfurt Auto Show, is a 4 wheel drive, mid engine 2+2 sports car. The CS&S is powered by Toyota's Synergy Drive, a hybrid drive system employing an electric motor to drive the front wheels, and a 1.5 litre petrol and an electric motor driving the rear wheels. The CS&S is an attractive open top vehicle with the ability to carry four passengers in style (rare for a hybrid vehicle). The small back seats of the CS&S are hidden by the rear canopy when not in use, and the front seats can be used as a tonneau cover when the car is parked to keep the rain off, and thieves out. The CS&S displayed advanced technologies in the interior by use of a system called 'Space Touch', which uses holographic projections to control various minor functions of the car, such as air con and lights.

The Toyota RSC (Rugged Sport Coupe) was designed by CALTY Design Research, Toyota's North American Design Center based in Newport Beach, California, and first shown at the 2001 Chicago Auto Show. The RSC was developed to test the waters regarding a next-generation sports car aimed at the adventurous younger buyer. The RSC's designers were given a great amount of freedom during the project, with a pretty open brief and no designated platform or drivetrain to adhere to. The RSC was a true concept car. The futuristic and rugged two-door body is especially appealing in profile, the front being slightly too cluttered, and the rear being too soft. The designers have also given the RSC a very mechanical appearance, with exaggerated sharp lines and dominating wheel arches making the vehicle look very masculine. Inside, the Toyota RSC's cockpit was designed to look like it was produced in a race shop, not a production line, and the high-mounted sequential shifter is directly influenced by modern rally cars. Essentially the Toyota's Rugged Sport Coupe is just that, not a sports car for the road, but for the off-road. An interesting and attractive idea, but also one with an extremely limited market.
