Cambridge Learners Dictionary 2Ed CD ROM
http://www.cambridge.org.br/upload/dictionaries/00000209.jpg
The Cambridge Learner's Dictionary will in no time become every student's inseparable companion, as well as a must in school libraries and resource centres. It has captured the needs of intermediate learners of English and the best way to explain what words mean and how they are used. A clear and attractive format makes it possible to navigate the dictionary smoothly... and I here invite the reader to hop on a stretch of this journey through some of its special features.
Each entry begins with the base form of the word in blue. Where a word has more than one meaning, the most common meaning is shown first and words which have several meanings have boxed guidewords to help the user find the meaning looked for.
When two words have the same spelling but different parts of speech, e.g. a noun and a verb, they have separate entries and when some words are used as part of an idiom, they are shown at the end of the entry (e.g. grip come/get to grips with sth.). Cross references show where related information can be found such as opposites, pictures, study pages and idioms.
Very common words, which are important to learn, are indicated by the symbol (e.g. explain). Irregular inflections are clearly shown (e.g. think past thought), and phrasal verbs come after the entry for the verb.
Labels show when a word is used in British or American English and tell you how formal, informal, etc a word is. Grammar labels tell the user how a word is used, (e.g. explain [+question word] Can you explain why you did this?; / [+(that)] He explained that he was going to stay with his sister), and usage notes highlighted in blue type give extra information about words which often cause problems for learners, e.g. explain something
Explain is followed by the thing you are explaining I'll explain the situation
Remember to use the preposition to before a person
I'll explain the situation to my parents
I'll explain the situation my parents.
When some words are used as part of a phrase, this is shown clearly at the start of the definition (e.g. fear for fear of sth/doing sth) and example sentences show how words are used in typical situations.
We now land on the centre of the book, which features illustrated pages organised by topics, and a Study Pages section containing information which deals with the most common problems met by learners.
This brings us to the optional plus.Should the learner wish to hear the pronunciation of a word, be it in British or American English, consult the thesaurus, or access the dictionary while working at the computer, all this is made possible by the CD-ROM, yet another user-friendly asset.
Having whetted your appetite, I will now leave you to pursue the journey yourself. There are many more features to explore and discoveries to make. I hope you enjoy doing so as much as I have
